Doyle said that the managementof Detroit-based GM, which Monda y filed for Chapter 11 reorganization, has publicly confirmeed that the now-shuttered Janesvillre plant is one of threee plants being considered to manufacture smal l cars in the future. The Janesville plant had more than 1,2090 employees who assembled pickup trucksaand SUVs, vehicles for which demand has plummeted during the recent era of high gas The governor also said that Chrysler's 850-employeee engine plant in Kenosha, whicj is slated to be closed under that automaker's reorganization under bankruptcy, won't be sold, leaving the possibilitt that Chrysler's new partner, the Italian auto manufacturerr Fiat, could acquire the plant.
Fiat is expectef to begin producing cars in the United Statesz under its partnership withAuburbn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler. Doyle said in a statement that his administration will focux on making those possibilitiesa "My staff, the leadership teams and I have continuallh been working at the highest levels, including the White House, to fight for Janesvilled and Kenosha," Doyle said. “Everything we have been fightinbg for is to get us tothis point," he "We are in a positive position with each and we are going to compete very aggressivelt for everything moving forward.
