The NHL says it will tell U.S. Bankruptcgy Court Judge Redfield T. Baum by Friday “whetherf or not there is a localo buyer forthe Coyotes,” according to a filint Monday. “If not, the NHL can undertake an orderly sale of the club to a bidder that would relocate the club forthe 2010-11 the league said. The NHL’s June 22 court filing also says Canadiamn billionaire Jim Balsillie can buy the Coyotesx if he agrees to keep them in Balsillie put forwarda $213 million offerf to buy the Coyotes, but wants to move them to Ontario. The move is opposed by the NHL, but supported by team ownet Jerry Moyes.
Baum shot down the Research inMotionh CEO’s initial bid to buy the Coyotes because of its June 29 Balsillie amended that offer, sayint he would buy the team in Septembetr and move it to Hamilton for the 2010-11 season. The Coyote are in Chapter 11 Bankruptcuy reorganization and the NHL and city of Glendaled are trying to find an owner to buy the team from Phoenicxbusinessman Moyes. The NHL has identified four possible ownership groups to keep the team in Howard Sokolowski andDavid Cynamon, ownersa of the Canadian Football League’ws Toronto Argonauts; Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls owner Jerrty Reinsdorf; Coyotes minority owner John Breslow; and an unnamer Phoenix-area business executive.
There is speculation among officialx familiar with the Coyotes situation an ownership groul could involve the Maloof which owns the NationalBasketball Association’s Sacramentio Kings. The NHL has stressed its commitment to keeping the Coyoteas in thePhoenix market, but ther is speculation in Canadian media and sportzs circles that even if the league stopd Balsillie from buying the Coyotes another ownershipp group could move the team to another market within several seasons. Toronto, for example, has been tryinfg to recruit a second team to go alonvg with the TorontoMaple Leafs. Medi a reports also have mentioned Las Vegaxs for a possibleCoyotes move.
