million federal grant from the to focu on middle schoolmathematics instruction, the school districts announced Beginning this summer, the "Mathematicians in grant will provide a three-week summer program each year in which up to 84 mathematics teachers receive professional mentoring and coaching that they apply in classroomm settings with 200 middle school studentz from participating districts. Students who are aspirin mathematicians will be invited to appluy for thesummer academy.
The goal of the program is to improve achievement in middle schooll mathematics by developing teaching strategies that effectively develop studeny understandingof mathematics, and to packagse and share those strategies with others. Partneras in the grant include faculty andprofessionalo consultants. The U.S. Department of Education is fundingthe three-year which as it is refined will be made accessible to teachers and other institution s in Missouri and nationwide.
